چکیده

There is a belief that subdivision schemes require the subdominant eigenvalue, λ , to be the same around extraordinary vertices as in the regular regions of the mesh [Barthe and Kobbelt, 2004, Zulti et al., 2006, Ni and Nasri, 2006]. This belief is owing to the polar rendering artifacts which occur around extraordinary points when λ is significantly larger than in the regular regions [Sabin and Barthe, 2003]. By constraining the tuning of subdivision schemes to solutions which fulfill this condition we may prevent ourselves from finding the optimal limit surface [Zorin and Schröder, 2000, pp 95–97]. We show that the perceived problem is purely a rendering artifact and that it does not reflect the quality of the underlying limit surface. Using the bounded curvature Catmull-Clark scheme [Augsdörfer et al., 2006] as an example, we describe three practical methods by which this rendering artifact can be removed, thereby allowing us to tune subdivision schemes using any appropriate values of λ .

Point-augmented biquadratic C1 subdivision surfaces

Shape artifacts, especially for convex input polyhedra, make Doo and Sabin’s generalization of bi-quadratic (bi-2) subdivision surfaces unattractive for general design. Rather than tuning the eigenstructure of the subdivision matrix, we improve shape by adding a point and enriching the refinement rules. Adding a guiding point can also yield a polar bi-2 subdivision algorithm. Both the augmented...

Iterative process to improve simple adaptive subdivision surfaces method for triangular meshes

Problem statement: Subdivision surfaces were applied to the entire meshes in order to produce smooth surfaces refinement from coarse mesh. Several schemes had been introduced in this area to provide a set of rules to converge smooth surfaces. However, to compute and render all the vertices are really inconvenient in terms of memory consumption and runtime during the subdivision process. It will...

Bi-3 C2 polar subdivision

Popular subdivision algorithms like Catmull-Clark and Loop are C almost everywhere, but suffer from shape artifacts and reduced smoothness exactly near the so-called “extraordinary vertices” that motivate their use. Subdivision theory explains that inherently, for standard stationary subdivision algorithms, curvature-continuity and the ability to model all quadratic shapes requires a degree of ...

Generation and Rendering of Fractal Terrains on Approximated Spherical Surfaces

Terrain modelling and rendering is an important aspect of modern computer games, computer generated scene rendering in movies and is also used in scientific simulations and geographic modelling. Rendering a planetary surface without polar geometry issues has long been a difficult problem, and this is exacerbated when simulation models need approximately smooth and equal areas. We have developed...
